Everyone listed here has performed with either
The Shambles or Manual Scan - as part of the group, either in concert or in the
studio, but only released material is included. Yes, some of these are tenuous,
but they're our friends and colleagues! This is a work in progress! Non San
Diegans are noted with a *, and videos are only listed if they were released
commercially. If you wish, you can jump directly to
the people listings, or directly to the
discographies, but we suggest you start with the index:

Right now we're just listing people who are/were directly involved in The
Shambles or Manual Scan, either by being a full-fledged member, by sitting in
at a gig, helping in the recording studio, or by having some direct influence
on the band. There are a huge number of people who fit just outside these
criteria, who have been involved with us in various peripheral ways over the
years. Two random examples would be
Pete Measner and Jimmie Conder. Pete was a member of The Crawdaddys with Mark
Z, and was in The Towne Cryers with Mark Z, Ray Brandes, and David Klowden. He was also a member of The Riot Act with
Bart and Ray. Jimmie Conder (aka Jimmie
Rooster) was a core member of The Roosters, along with Ritchie
"Rooster" Brubaker. Orrick
Smith was also a long-time Rooster, and Kevin lent his talents to that band for
a short time. Jimmie was also in
Comanche Moon, a band that has featured Joel Kmak and whose lead guitarist for
the last several years has been Richard "Blitz" Livoni. Such an
intricate web, this scene of musicians!
Considering how many
bands David played a key role in, you'd think there would be more recordings!
During his Manual Scan stint David did play on "Nothing Can Be
Everything" as well as contribute to several years of touring, including
Las Vegas, the General Public tour stint and much much more. Caused much mayhem
during tour supports for the Plimsouls, Untouchables and the like…
On the Shambles Spanish
tour, Frank opened all the shows, and by the second night was pretty much in
the band for the duration!
Paul produced Manual
Scan's "Lost Sessions" EP and "New Song", playing keyboards
on the latter and singing on the former. Manual Scan of course opened for the
Jetset at the 100 Club in London, Paul and Ed Ball, Simon Smith, Kevin and Bart
were the initial one off ad hoc group Boys About Town, Kevin plays guitar on
the Jetset track "Heaven and Mrs. Winter".
A founding Shamble, Ray
took part in all early sessions, "Fire", "I Can't Don’t"
"Thin Lines etc. Pre Shambles he recorded a series of demos with Kevin and
co-produced the final Manual Scan EP "Days & Maybe's" - he sings
on "Of Heart & Soul". He also toured the UK with the band,
including the Marquee, Cricketeers and more and recorded a demo session as
well. Later he toured with Bart and formed the Riot Act side project. Ray
played drums at some early gigs, including an Off The Record in store, and
plays keyboards on "Louise" amongst others.
Another key Shamble,
Bill provided a signature sound. Ray went solo, David stayed, Bill joined,
David retired, Ron Silva joined…. Bill played at least one tour (Casbah SD/Toes
Tavern Pasadena/Old Ironsides Sacramento/Starry Plough Berekely/ Purple Onion
San Francisco) with Ron also aboard.
Yeah, Dave is not listed
in alphabetic order, but neither is Bill, and that's because Ray, Bill, and
David are special: All 3 were key Shambles. Along with Kevin, Mark, and Ray,
David was a founding Shamble – the very first drummer. David went to England
with the band, and stayed on through various lineups during the first few
years. I repeat all three were key Shambles, without whom…
An original La Jolla
High member, we rehearsed in his mom's living room most Wednesdays for about a
year and off and on after that. Paul plays drums on Manual Scan's "Plan Of
Action" EP, and although he left the band not long after that record was
released, he also played on most of the first album a few years later, as well.
RITCHIE BRUBAKER: THE ROOSTERS [discog], MANUAL
SCAN
Ritchie was a member of
The Roosters, the very first band that Manual Scan opened for on July 4,
1981. Ritchie later joined Scan,
playing many gigs and he appears on the album “One”.
AKA Gary Wilson in the
Mari Wilson band, and a close friend of the band. Joined Secret Affair in time
for their last LP, including the brilliant "Lost In The Night"
single, and was a not so behind the scenes member of the Jetset and their label
the Dance Network. Drummed with Paul Collins as well, currently works with some
of the biggest names in pop...
John played fill in
drums with Manual Scan at several "events" including the Vista Boat
Cruise, toured with the Shambles, including San Francisco, LA, Berkeley, San
Diego and Sacramento, taped a live session on KCR and recorded
"Harmony" and "Might As Well". Amazingly these are only the
bands he's recorded with , the full list of groups he's performed with is
staggering…
In addition to several
gigs with Manual Scan opening, Jeff played six gigs on keyboards (as guest)
with the group, including Montezuma Hall, Soma and numerous nights at a La
Jolla club. Ray filled in on vocals at one Lyres gig and Carl, Ron and Tom made
up a West Coast Lyres.
Original Manual Scan
member from the earliest days of Abbey Road! Fantastic bassist through the
Kings Road and Headquarters days of the early eighties. Recorded demo sessions
at Hit Single, the first EP, as well as producing early Kevin demos- he's also
played live with the band in the late eighties at the original Casbah! Dave
actually only plays on the "Plan of Action" EP, but we want to keep
the discography as complete as possible so….
Rachael assembled a roster of players from her favorite local bands for
this winsome project, including members of Manual Scan/The Shambles, The
Melanies, Static Halo, The Tell Tale Hearts, The Zeros, Ju Ju Eyeball and even
ace bassist Billy Lovcki, Richaard Livoni and A.J. Croce
Scott produced the first
Manual Scan EP and played with the band, including a gig at SDSU's Backdoor. We
opened for The Penetrators a few times, notably at the Adams Ave. Theatre, and
they were a huge inspiration. Scott is only on that first Penetrators EP, but
for the sake of completeness…See Also Beat Farmers, Jacks, Crawdaddys,
Frontline Four, Buddy Blue, Gary Heffern in Basic discography for more info…
Played drums on the
Shambles Spanish 1999 tour, as well as a few others Stateside. Shambles demo
sessions recorded at his Earthling Studios. He also drums on most of Bart's
demos as well as all of the Melanies tracks.
One of the original
round robin members of the Megalopolis Club, which begat the Shambles. "It
Is And It Isn't" was a Jon solo cut (backed in the studio by Kevin, Dave,
and Mark Z), which we liked so much we included it on "Reviving
Spark". Jon sings on "Is It In My Head" and "These
Moments" and tour managed England for the band.
Joel played drums for
Manual Scan - notably at an SDSU Backdoor show and a skateboard park - as well
as a teen dance at Bonita Vista High! Currently pounding skins for the
Sleazybeats and Powerthud
The amazing producer/engineer for the "Clouds All Day" album and many other Shambles tracks is a San Diego legend in his own right.
Mick London, Chris Collins and Bob Strete were a very important part of the
San Diego experience throughout the mid eighties, playing the first "New
Sounds" at Club Zu, Rock Palace, New Generation, and living at Bart's
house or his parent's for weeks at a time. Both groups incorporate musical
acknowledgement of the other group in numerous songs, and there are even a few
shared titles. As well, Mick Co-wrote "New Song" from "American
Heart And soul" with Bart. Group went on to form basis for Crockodile Shop
and on …
Signed Manual Scan to
his UK Hi Lo Records, produced "Ever Any Reason" from the first
album. Backed by Manual Scan at gigs in LA and San Diego, including "New
Sounds". Shambles recorded 2 of his songs: "Does Stephanie Know"
and "It's A Mod Mod World". Anthony was also the catalyst for the
Boys About Town Project, only the San Francisco radio show was released from
this two off band.
All around entertainer Gregory Page guests on "Is It In My Head" from the Japanese Who Tribute album
and sings backups on "These Moments", best of all though- you really
can't miss that distinctive voice on "Brilliant", both of the latter
on "Clouds All Day". He is also part of the Mission: To Mars* project
with Bart, Mike Kamoo & Dylan Martinez.
Victor played drums with the Shambles for several years, including a demo session at Earthling, and numerous LA shows, although he missed a KCR session : - ) . Also toured in the Riot Act with Bart and Ra
